When a tennis ball hits the strings of a racquet, the impact creates vibrations that travel through the racquet frame and into the player's arm. Over many shots, that repeated vibration can add up to discomfort in the wrist, elbow and shoulder.
The core of both ShockSorb® dampeners is made of Sorbothane®, a viscoelastic polymer designed to absorb and dissipate energy — 94.7% of impact, per Sorbothane® material spec. The difference is how firm that core is.
ShockSorb® Ultrasoft
The Ultrasoft has a lower durometer rating (60, softer) than the Original (73, firmer). This means the Ultrasoft is more pliable and deforms more easily on impact, spreading the impact energy over a larger surface area. The result is less vibration reaching your arm and a softer, more muted feel. It's the best starting point for players with arm sensitivity, players coming back from an injury, or anyone playing in cold weather (below 10°C).
ShockSorb® Original
The Original is slightly firmer, keeping a crisper, more responsive feel. One of its signature features is the "pop" sound it produces on impact — louder and more distinct than most dampeners, which many of our junior and pro players prefer. You typically hear it most on harder, cleaner hits, so it also works as audible confirmation of a well-struck ball. It's a great choice for players who want comfort without losing the feel and feedback of their racquet.
Which should you choose?
- Choose Ultrasoft if you want maximum dampening, have arm sensitivity, or play long sessions or in the cold.
- Choose Original if you want a crisper feel and the "pop", with comfort as a bonus.
Many players start with the Ultrasoft and move to the Original once they feel comfortable. Both install the same way and both are built with the same 4-piece independent-arm design.
A note on arm pain
Everyone's experience is different. Many players find ShockSorb® helps reduce the vibration and discomfort they feel, but a dampener alone may not be enough to address an underlying arm injury. If you have persistent pain in your arm, please consult a medical professional to find the cause and the right treatment.
See how to install it correctly in our care & installation guide.
